PM Modi recalls Amanjot’s WC final catch

PM Modi hosted the World Cup-winning Indian women’s cricket team at his Kalyan Marg residence in Delhi on Wednesday and lauded them for their resilience and recalled key moments from the final, including Amanjot Kaur’s juggling catch that turned the game in India’s favour.

The Prime Minister congratulated the players not only for winning the title but also for their resilience after three early defeats in the tournament and the criticism that followed on social media. He praised their unity, focus and fightback in the crucial knockout stages.
PM Modi highlighted Amanjot Kaur’s dramatic catch in the final. Positioned near the boundary, Amanjot juggled the ball multiple times before eventually holding it to dismiss Nadine de Klerk, who was a threath to chane the course of the chase. The catch shifted momentum firmly in India’s favour.
PM recalled the moment with a smile and said, while taking the catch, you keep your eyes on the ball. After the catch, your eyes must be on the trophy.
Amanjot said this was one fumble she would always remember fondly.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur shared that this visit was particularly emotional. She recalled the team’s meeting with the Prime Minister in 2017 after the Women’s ODI World Cup final, when they had come close but did not win the trophy. She expressed her happiness that this time, the team arrived as champions. She added that she hopes they will return in the future with even more trophies.

Vice-captain Smriti Mandhana said the Prime Minister has always motivated the team and that showing him the trophy felt imnensely meaningful. She also mentioned that girls across India are excelling in all fields today. She also felt that encouragement from leadership plays an important role.

Player of the Tournament, Deepti Sharma shared that she had been looking forward to this meeting. PM spoke about her tattoo of Bhagwan Hanuman and her social media post that said Jai Shri Ram. Deepti said her faith gives her inner strength during pressure moments.
The Prime Minister also recalled Harleen Deol’s memorable boundary catch from 2021, noting how such moments show character and commitment.

PM Modi encouraged the players to promote the Fit India movement, especially among young girls. He spoke over the escalating challenge of obesity and urged the players to visit schools and inspire children to stay active and healthy.
The meeting ended on a warm and celebratory note, with shared smiles, memories and pride in a long-awaited victory.
