It wasn’t merely a hit movie but, turned out to be a cultural touchstone in the late ’80s. It was Sooraj Barjatya’s first film as a director, which catapulted Salman Khan and Bhagyashree to the dizzy heights of stardom. It also introduced fresh faces, like Pervien Dastur, who played Seema, Suman’s stylish and witty friend. The movie broker the box office records and emerged as a Bollywood classic. But, Pervien, unlike the other actors, went missing from the public eye following that.

From theatre to Sooraj Barjatya’s sets
Pervien came of age in Mumbai sans any support or a god-father in the glitzy world. It all kicked-off in college when she took up modeling and then made her entry into theatre. According to reports, she acted in English plays with big names like Naseeruddin Shah and Pearl Padamsee. It was Sooraj Barjatya who spotted her at one of these shows. He liked her stage presence and her funny timing. Soon later, he talked to his dad, Raj Kumar Barjatya. He dined with Pervien and offered her a part in ‘Maine Pyar Kiya.’ Pervien made ₹25,000 for her first flick. It wasn’t much compared to Bhagyashree’s ₹1.5 lakh. Even so, it transformed everything for her.

Stardom and a sudden exit
Following the blockbuster success of ‘Maine Pyar Kiya,’ Pervien was noticed admired and appreciated by audiences. Offers soon poured in for her, but, none excited her. In an interview she revealed, whatever offers came there was no fun in that. Maybe she was spoiled by Rajshri.” Embittered with the monotonous roles coming her way, she decided to take a step back from films, regardless having the attention and opportunity most newcomers could only dream of.

Choosing a path distant from the glamour of Bollywood, Pervien emerged as an air hostess with Air India—a decision that symbolized both her independence and her quest for satisfaction beyond fame. Interestingly, she was initially signed opposite Salman Khan again for Suryavanshi released in 1992 but was later replaced by Amrita Singh. Likewise, she missed out on working with Aamir Khan in Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, as she had already accepted her airline appointment; the role finally Navneet Nishan stepped in. She was also offered the sitcom ‘Zabaan Sambhaal Ke,’ which later featured Tanaaz Currim Irani.

She was out of the public eye as in 1992, Pervien married model and actor Shahrukh Irani, with whom she shares two daughters. Today, she leads a content life away from the camera, focusing on her family and creative pursuits. A certified hairstylist, her Instagram feed showcases her talent with happy clients and elegant hairstyles.

In the midst of her brief time in Bollywood, Pervien Dastur’s story remains a fascinating reminder that not every actor seeks the arc lights; some find fulfillment in rewriting their own scripts.
