Looking back: When Shashi Kapoor once declined National Award

Veteran actor once was honoured with Padma Bhushan in 2011 and Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2014.
Shashi Kapoor is remembered not only for his versatile performances but also for his grace, humility, and integrity.
Notwithstanding his charismatic screen presence and Incredible acting skills that captivated fans across generations, he never glorified fame. Instead, he lived a simple life, far removed from the airs of a film dynasty.
He very much
remains one of the most beloved actors of the Kapoor clan, the legendary Shashi Kapoor. His grounded nature and simplicity led him to make a decision that once left the entire industry stunned.
He refused to accept a National Award and that too at the beginning of his career.
He began his acting journey as the lead in Yash Chopra’s Dharmputra released in 1962. The film explored themes of religious extremism and the pain of Partition.
Shashi Kapoor played a troubled young man who, unaware of his real identity, gradually becomes drawn toward religious fanaticism.
It was a very challenging role, and Shashi’s sincerity won him critical appreciation. He was selected for the Best Actor honour at the National Awards.
Shashi Kapoor declined the award and explained he did not believe his performance deserved such a high honour.
For many newcomers, such early recognition would feel like a dream come true, but Shashi chose a completely different direction.
Years later, in an interview, he recalled, “Mujhe National Award ke liye chuna gaya tha, lekin maine ise thukra diya kyunki mujhe laga meri performance utni achhi nahin thi.”
His refusal did not affect his bond with Yash Chopra, in fact, it strengthened it. The two later collaborated on several iconic films including Deewaar, Kabhi Kabhie, Trishul, and Waqt.
Shashi Kapoor was last seen in the film Ghar Bazaar, where he made a special appearance. He breathed his last on December 4, 2017, but his legacy of talent, dignity, and humility continues to live on.
