Akshaye Khanna recalls his father’s life-altering decision
In an old interview, Akshaye Khanna recalled his father late Vinod Khanna over the emotional impact of his father leaving everything behind. He said, “to not only leave his family, but to take ‘sanyaas’ .
Sanyaas means giving up your life in totality-family is a part of it. It’s a life-transforming decision, which he needed to take at the time. As a five-year-old, it was impossible to understand it.”
Akshaye khanna, while reflecting on Vinod Khanna’s inner journey, added, that “something must have moved him so intensely inside that he felt that kind of decision was worth it for him. Especially when you have everything in life. A very basic fault line/earthquake has to occur within oneself to make that decision. But also stick by it.”

He further asserted that one can make the decision and say this doesn’t suit him-let’s go back. But it never happened.
When quizzed what’s that prompted asked why he believed his father eventually returned to his family and career, Akshaye said, “From whatever memories he has about father talking about that time in his life, he doesn’t think that was a reason at all, just the fact that the commune was disbanded and destroyed, and everybody had to find their own way. That’s when he returned. Otherwise, he doesn’t think he would’ve ever come return.
Vinod Khanna had embraced Sanyaas in 1982 and joined Osho’s ashram in Oregon, USA. He returned to India around 1985 and resumed acting until he died in 2017.

Conversing about that period, Vinod Khanna’s second wife, Kavita Khanna, also revealed that Vinod Khanna’s decision was intensely personal. She shared that he went to Osho’s ashram following his mother’s death and added, Vinod Khanna wasn’t expecting to emerge as a member of Parliament. There was a lot of work in process when he died.
Kavita also opened up over her bond with Akshaye Khanna and said, that it was passion and love. Both were in sync with each other. It was a perfect marriage with all its flaws.”
Vinod Khanna was first married to Geetanjali Khanna in 1971; later, the duo parted ways in 1985, the same period when he bid adieu to left films to follow Osho’s teachings. He later married Kavita Khanna.
