Bina Ramani recounts on the Rekha-Amitabh relationship

Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan make one of the most power couple on-screen in Hindi cinema. They have collaborated together in films like ‘Muqaddar Ka Sikandar’, ‘Laawaris’ ‘Suhaag’, ‘Silsila’,
‘Do Anjaane’,
‘Mr Natwarlal’, ‘Ram Balram’ to name a few. Perhaps, that also had to do with rumours of their offscreen bond They were always linked to each other, though they’ve never admitted to it.

Meanwhile, Rekha has expressed her admiration towards him at several instances. In an old interview with Simi Garewal, when Rekha was asked if she ever fell in love with him, she had said, “Absolutely! That’s a dumb question!” She then added, “she was yet to come across a man, woman, or child who can’t help but fall completely in love with him. Why should she (Rekha) be singled out?”
though, she had denied having any personal connect. Rekha had said, that there was never a personal connect with him. What does she deny? She wasn’t in love with him? Of course she was. Duniya bhar ka love aap le lijiyega and add some more, she feels that for that person. Bottomline”

Now over a media interaction, Rekha’s friend, Bina Ramani, Author, fashion designer and entrepreneur who shared an intense rapport with the Bollywood’s stunning actress recalled the state of mind the actress was navigating at that time around.Amidst the interaction Bina an interview, Ramani went on to hint that Rekha was not seeking secrecy, but validation. According to her, Amitabh Bachchan’s marriage to Jaya Bachchan and his burgeoning political ambitions ultimately made such acknowledgment impossible.

Elaborating on Rekha’s childhood, Ramani said Rekha was a very good friend, childlike and pure. If she has made silly moves in her life, those were out of innocence. She was trapped by her childhood. Amid the role of a mother and a father, she must have craved and couldn’t get enough of love. And then at a very young age 13–14, she started working. She didn’t get an opportunity to enjoy the childhood.
She further went on to add that this longing for emotional reassurance shaped Rekha’s personal bond, and it was Rekha’s feeling of that sense of security with Amitabh Bachchan. Ramani also revealed how intensely Rekha was consumed by that bond. “When she met her, her (Rekha’s) entire life was encased in Amitabh Bachchan. When asked whether Rekha was genuinely in love with him, Ramani responded, “Yes, she believed she belonged to him in spirit and that he belonged to her in spirit. They had a communication. These things can happen.

The situation, however, turned out to be more complicated when Amitabh Bachchan stepped into politics. Ramani recalled that Rekha found it increasingly difficult to accept that their passionate bond could never be publicly recognised.
Amitabh had joined politics, and she had come to visit her (Ramani) in New York. She was going through hard time because Amitabh had now emerged as a public person, and he may have probably said to her that there was no chance of him ever
their alliance must have had to drift
publicly no more.

On the professional front Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan were last seen together onscreen in in Yash Chopra’s ‘Silsila’ released in1981 and which also featured Jaya Bachchan this was nothing less than a casting coup.
