Notwithstanding Dhurandhar having an ensemble starcast, actress Saumya Tandon managed to get noticed as the wife of Rehman Dakait, played by Akshaye Khanna. She is also being lauded for her character.
Over her recent media interaction, she looked back at her journey from the TV show Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain to Dhurandhar.
On what took her so long to get into Dhurandhar, Saumya Tandon recalls that sometimes, the fact that you will get an opportunity to work also, you know, it’s not like you’re giving competitive exams like in other professions, that if you are deserving, you will get your seat. It doesn’t work like that in the industry. It’s a sum total of a lot of things. You sometimes have to hustle; you sometimes have to have that kind of networking or the reach or a surname or the background. And sometimes even the best actors don’t get the right opportunities. So, she doesn’t think this industry really works on meritocracy as against other professions. Having said that, it’s been a journey with good and bad. Like she said, she was very, very lucky to be a part of super hit projects in whatever she did.
Continuing she said she is a bit choosy, and admit it. But at the same time she also feels that if she had the right background, she (would have) started off in a different way. Like, to cite an example, had she not started with a sister role in Jab We Met or if had started with a lead role, maybe in those times when she was starting, she would have had a different career graph. Yeah, she means, probably she got it late, but all she can say is that she navigated her career absolutely figuring everything out on her own, holding on to a twig and reaching out for a branch.
She had the least idea how and where to go and what was the right strategy and what was the right thing to do. She isn’t a hustler and doesn’t know how to network. All she knows is that she is gifted with talent and believes in it. Saumya has a terrific upbringing and is extremely rooted. She belongs to a very academic background, been a literature student herself. She is aware she is a thinking actress. And what keeps her afloat is the belief that it’s her responsibility towards her talent to keep herself being better and getting better. That’s all is her aim in life. And she feels like she is a learner.
On is she more confident about the future, she says she doesn’t know how far she will go, but knows that she is going to get better with every year. And she is here for a long haul for sure. She has seen, and been a part of, actually, if she has to say that she has been really grateful, she hasvbeen 90% of the times in her life, she has been part of super, super successful projects. Even though she shared a small part in Jab We Met, the movie turned out to be one of the most iconic rom-coms of its time. Dance India Dance was one of the most popular dance reality shows, a first in India. Bournvita Quiz Contest was in Limca Book of Records. Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain is a very loved sitcom on television. And Dhurandhar is now, of course, going to be seeing new records for Hindi cinema. She further recalls she has seen fame, but would like to say that whatever she is getting at the moment is a sum total of what she has done earlier.
When asked how did she feel to be mobbed
Saumya shot back that It’s not that she would say that it’s just because of Dhurandhar that people are suddenly recognizing her. It’s also the love that she has got from her earlier TV show Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain. People have loved her in it and it has got an immense reach. She knew it’s fashionable to put the television down, but she would like to share that the show that she did was very well written, very well done. And she just feels that if this part was done by someone absolutely new, she thinks the love wouldn’t be the same. People are loving her because they have really, really liked herband loved her in her previous work. And they are giving her double love back because of this show. So, it’s a sum total of whatever she has done in her life before.

To this she said she just knew that Akshaye is such a scene stealer. She means, he just is so nuanced. His work is so deep, like it’s got so much of layering in his work. He’s such a clever actor. She further means., she just exactly knows what to give, how much expression to give to the camera. He deserves it all. He was always there. He was always very good, but she feels so glad that she is again showing his magic to the world and the world is giving all the love back to him and he deserves it.
But having said that, she would like to say that Ranveer Singh did a fantastic job and that she loves him in this. Imagine he’s the superstar and he just holds himself back. The kind of restraint he has shown in his acting is the work of a very, very capable actor. He’s just let everybody else… you know, in some parts, he’s just standing behind with his head down and he’s just moving his eyes. Saumya really, truly, joyfully enjoyed his performance.
