Amidst AR Rahman’s evolving controversy over communal bias in Bollywood and calling Chhaava as a divisive film and not getting work and while his remarks drew online criticism drew, now UAE filmmaker Nayla Al Khaja has publicly come out in his support and calls him a ‘national treasure’
Touted as the UAE’s first female filmmaker, Nayla Al Khaja shared a detailed note on Instagram, offering a personal perspective on working with the Oscar-winning composer. Emphasising that her views stem from lived experiences rather than opinion, she wrote, “On Working with A. R. Rahman, a Perspective from the Outside
She worked with A. R. Rahman on BAAB and have known him and his family for several years. What she shares comes from lived moments, not opinion, not distance.
Remembers flying back together with him and Raheema and landing in Dubai Airport. Were exhausted. There was a swarm of people waiting, and yet every few minutes he stopped. Again and again, a gentle smile, a photograph, a quiet kindness.
Watched, mind boggled, as he made every single person feel seen.
Recalling their creative collaboration, Nayla showcased Rahman’s openness and generosity amidst composition sessions
and would jump in with ideas. Can we try this? Can we try that? He always listened from an open space, without judgement or prejudice, only generosity and trust in the creative process and gave her space to imagine.”
She also spoke about the bond Rahman shares with his children, calling it deeply telling of the person he is.
Also witnessed the immense love his children have for him, a deep, natural affection that cannot be performed. When you see that kind of love, you understand the man. Perhaps this is what happens when you are a legend, you become easy to project onto, and harder to protect.”
Calling Rahman a cultural bridge beyond borders, Nayla added, “He gave voices to so many, opened doors, and carried culture with dignity. As an Arab, she came to know Indian music through him, emotion without translation. This man is a national treasure. Treasures deserve respect, not noise.
Let us choose grace over outrage, respect over distortion.

Amid the controversy, AR Rahman released a video statement addressing the criticism and clarifying his intent. He said, “Music has always been his way of connecting, celebrating and honouring our culture. India is his inspiration, his teacher and his home.
Understands that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood. But his purpose has always been to uplift, honour and serve through music. He has never wished to cause pain, and hopes his sincerity is felt.
