Meera Chadha Borwankar is one of India’s most respected police officers, acknowledged for her dauntless leadership, integrity, and trailblazing work in some of the country’s most sensitive investigations.
A 1979-batch Indian Police Service officer of the Maharashtra cadre,
she dismantled concrete ceilings amidst her long and distinguished career, emerging as a symbol of professionalism and courage in Indian policing.
Born into an academic family, Meera Borwankar, early in life developed a strong sense of discipline and public service. She joined the IPS at a time when the force had very few women officers, and the challenges were not only professional but also social. Undeterred, she carved out a reputation for efficiency and fairness through her early postings in Maharashtra, where she handled law and order responsibilities with confidence and resolve.
Borwankar national stature for her role in investigating several high-profile and complex cases. She played an instrumental role played in the probe related to the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blasts. It was one of the most devastating terror attacks in India’s history. Her work in
anti-terror and crime investigation units highlighted her sharp analytical skills and intense understanding of criminal networks. In the course of time she also led investigations into organized crime, economic offences, and sensitive cases involving influential individuals, earning respect for her independence and adherence to the rule of law.
One of the most notable facet of her career was her tenure as Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, Mumbai. In this role, she oversaw critical investigations and strengthened institutional processes within the police force. Known for her calm demeanor under pressure, she emphasized evidence-based policing and team-driven investigation, setting high professional standards for her colleagues.
Following calling it a day in police service(retirement) Meera Chadha Borwankar continued to contribute to public discourse through writing and mentoring. Her memoir, which incredibly reflects on her journey in the IPS, offers rare insights into the realities of policing, gender bias, and ethical dilemmas faced by officers. Through public speaking and advocacy, she has consistently spoken about police reforms, women’s leadership, and the importance of accountability in governance.
