Amir dismissive as India lift T20 World Cup
After India’s victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup final against New Zealand, former Pakistan pacer Mohammad Amir reacted with visible irritation and frustration after his repeated predictions against India failed.
He dismissed the win by saying, “They won, that’s fine, they’ll take the cup home, they won’t bring it to his house.
He displayed “visible irritation” amidst the post-match discussion.
Amir had predicted that India would not reach the semifinals and subsequently that they would not win the final.
Following the 96-run win by India, he criticized New Zealand’s bowling tactics rather than fully acknowledging India’s performance.
His comments drew significant backlash and mockery on social media.
Earlier, the former Pakistan pacer said the Blackcaps would win the final. Ahead of the post-match show, when Amir was asked what he had to say as his prediction went wrong the former Pakistan pacer had an indifferent response as he said India will not be bringing the T20 World Cup trophy to his house.
“They won, that’s fine, they’ll take the cup home, they won’t bring it to my house, well done…”
Earlier on in the tournament, Amir predicted that India would lose to South Africa in the Super 8 and got it right. Since then, he kept saying that India wouldn’t reach the final and win the title. Because of this, the former Pakistan pacer was slammed by fans and former Indian cricketers like Navjot Singh Sidhu and Mohammed Kaif.
While talking about the game on Harna Maana Hai, Amir said that it was the New Zealand bowlers who handed India the title. The former Pakistan pacer was puzzled by the strategy used by Mitchell Santner for not persisting with off-spin against Abhishek Sharma and allowing him to get off to a fine start.
Amir also felt that New Zealand buckled under pressure of the final.
“Credit also goes to New Zealand bowlers in a strange way. They were bowling four-four wides outside the stumps and still getting hit for sixes from there. Very loose bowling. It’s not that India doesn’t deserve credit. But he didn’t understand the strategy. First he bowled Henry, then off-spinner, then Henry again. In two overs Henry gave only 12 runs and suddenly the whole plan was changed. Very strange bowling.”
“When you know Abhishek Sharma struggles against
off-spin, you should bring that immediately. But they brought Duffy and did strange bowling. Lockie Ferguson today looked like a very normal bowler to him.Three balls wide, two balls
off-cutter and then one slot ball a hit for six.
Amir had followed New Zealand since 2004-05
and never seen them under this much pressure. Maybe because of the crowd, maybe because it was a final. But look, Abhishek Sharma is also a young guy. He didn’t do anything the entire tournament. He must have had pressure too. Then somewhere skill level difference comes in. The mental strength of players matters in these matches. And Amir thinks India showed that, that’s why they won the final
