Rani Mukherji’s ‘husky’ voice became her ‘Signature’ Identity

Bollywood’s versatile Queen Rani Mukherji perceived weakness with her husky voice, but it turned out to be her signature identity and a key part of her success.

At the start of her career (late 1990s), Rani Mukerji was criticized for having a very heavy, husky voice, which makers initially felt was unsuitable for Hindi cinema. In her early films, such as Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat and Ghulam, her voice was considered a weakness to the point that it was dubbed by voice artists. Over time, the audience embraced her unique voice, and it became one of her most distinct features and a “signature identity” that brought character to her performances.

Rani Mukerji has often spoken about how she turned this perceived weakness into a strength, showing immense character and winning multiple accolades, including Filmfare Awards for both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress in the same year.

Although,Meena Kumari is historically referred to as the “Tragedy Queen” whose personal melancholy influenced her roles, Rani Mukerji is specifically noted for transforming a technical shortcoming (voice) into a signature asset.
