Kitu Gidwani calls current TV landscapeas solely ‘business driven’

Popular television actress Kitu Gidwani has expressed strong criticism over the current state of Indian television, specifically noting that it has transformed into a business focused on “saas-bahu” (mother-in-law/daughter-in-law) dramas rather than quality content.

In recent interviews, Kitu Gidwani highlighted several issues: She described the current TV landscape as solely business-driven, stating, “Ab sab dhandha hai” (Now it is all business). She mentioned being told by others to “close her eyes and do it” because it is just a business transaction.
Kitu Gidwani claimed that television has degenerated significantly over the last 20 years, describing it as having gone into a “black hole”.
She feels that major television networks have failed Indian audiences by moving away from the diverse, creative programming of the 1980s and 90s, such as Tamas, Banegi Apni Baat, and Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi.
Due to her belief that the quality of current TV is very poor, she has largely stayed away from the medium, refuseing most offers for 15 years.

Kitu Gidwani has noted that she prefers working on OTT platforms because they offer the creative freedom to tackle diverse topics and avoid the rigid structures of daily soap operas.
