Sharmila Tagore recalls Daag shoot in drenched saree after hit by snowballs
Veteran actor Sharmila Tagore reminiscences filmmaker Yash Chopra as film Daag completes 50 years on Thursday, 27April 2023. The film featured Sharmila with Rajesh Khanna and Rakhee, and continues to be one of the most remembered romantic Hindi films.
Sharmila Tagore on her work experience with Yash Chopra and Rajesh Khanna recalls of being hit by snowballs while filming in Shimla.
While interacting with the media On Yash Chopra who made his debut as a producer with Daag, Sharmila stated she felt wonderful that the film completes 50 years of its release. It is a matter of pride that the movie and the songs remain so popular.
In fact, recently Manoj Bajpayee (she shared screen space with him in Gulmohar with him) was constantly singing Ek Chehre Pe Dusre Chehre Laga Dete Hai Log. She had to tell him to please don’t sing it. Her reaction was that when she was offered Daag it was an unparalleled joy, really. She saw it as a great compliment and honour to be a part of Yash’s first venture, his debut as a producer. She was absolutely thrilled
For Sharmila, working in Daag was a tremendous experience. Even when she worked with him in Waqt it was a wonderful experience. He was always so much fun. As a director, he energised everyone on the set. Ask anybody who has worked with him, with his Punjabi endearments and just generally he was like a live wire. The film was shot in exquisite locations.
She cited an episode while on shoot for Daag. While shooting in Shimla one day she woke up to a landscape covered in snow; a stunning view from her hotel window but that also meant that she had to walk to work as no car could come to us through the snow; she remembers that she would get ready in make up-hair and everything and barely walk 5 steps when something hit really hard and it turned out to be a snowball.
She turned around to protest and spotted a bunch of giggly girls and they said ‘Yeh toh hamara khel hai, hum toh khelenge (this is our game)’. She tried to explain to them but they wouldn’t listen (laughs). And she had to walk the distance to the location which was thankfully not too far being constantly hit with snowballs. She also threw some at them but her aim was not half as good as theirs! But anyway, she enjoyed that by the end of it; it’s another matter that she had to change at the location because she was drenched; so they made sort of a make-shift room where she could change her sari! Anyway, it was a great experience playing their game ‘Yeh toh hamara khel hai, hum toh khelenge’,” Sharmila added.
Sharmila also recalled working with Rajesh Khanna in the movie and said, she felt that think Kaka (Rajesh Khanna) gave a memorable performance in Daag and he looked really handsome in his later avatar as Rakhee’s husband with that moustache and that dashing look . He played two different stages in his life and he was already the heartthrob of the nation. She was happy that the audience liked Rajesh Khanna.
In course of time they emerged as hit pair. They pair went on to work in few films and became the most successful
Released in the year 1973, Daag was a big hit. Apart Sharmila and Rajesh, it also had Madan Puri, Kader Khan, Prem Chopra and A.K Hangal in key roles. Sharmila was last seen in Gulmohar with Manoj Bajpayee.
