Akshay Kumar recalls Amitabh Bachchan’s advice amid criticism for overexposure.
Actor Akshay Kumar has dismissed complaints on overexposure, and saying that there is no guarantee that if he does only two films a year, they’ll be hits.
Notedly the actor is prolific, and usually delivers three or four movies every year. But following a string of back-to-back flops, his critics suggest that he need to be more selective. In an interview, the actor recalled the piece of advice given to him by the legendary Amitabh Bachchan, who himself has experienced career setbacks.
Amidst the interview Akshay said that he gave 12 days to OMG 2, a movie featuring him in a supporting role, and he worked on the upcoming Jolly LLB 3 for 45 days. Akshay also recalled that he cannot impose himself on filmmakers and producers for longer than he’s required, and that he worked on his recent flop Bade Miyan Chote Miyan for a full 80 days. What difference did it make? he asked rhetorically, referring to the film’s commercial failure.
He went on to add that he has “ seen people working selectively, and their films flop as well. In our industry, what happens is that people stop offering you work if you deliver flops. Look at the Senior Bachchan. He was the one who told him, Akshay, don’t turn down work. He learned from him that calculation is wrong, manipulation is wrong. Honesty is right, creativity is right. Believing in your luck is right.
In the same interview, Akshay addressed being written off by the industry, and said that he isn’t a ‘racehorse’. He also suggested that certain people within the industry celebrate when he fails. But he didn’t take any names, noting that he is disgusted by the politics that he sees around himself. Akshay has appeared in only two clean hits in the post-pandemic years – OMG 2, but he wasn’t the lead of that film, and Sooryavanshi, which also features several other stars and a big-name director. Among his many high-profile recent flops are Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, Raksha Bandhan, Ram Setu, Samrat Prithviraj, Selfiee, Bachchhan Paandey. He can currently be seen in Sarfira, a remake of Soorarai Pottru.
