When actress-director Suhasini Maniratnam claimed that Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan were doing clichéd roles
in films.

Suhasini has worked in the Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, and Kannada film industries, among others, is married to filmmaker Mani Ratnam. She often opines overboard issues, and recently, spoke about women’s safety in the film industry.

In an interview published a decade ago, she spoke about the rut that Indian films were in, and highlighted the creative stagnation that Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan were experiencing. She said that they only do “stereotypical roles” and have “never attempted anything different.” She also spoke about the state of Bollywood.

Suhasini, prefers non-fiction over fiction and independent films over commercial cinema. She shared her views on the state of indie cinema in the country. She went on to quote that the tamil film industry started making such films a long time ago, with films such as Nenjitha Killathai, Palaivanai Cholai, Sindhu Bhairavi. It’s only now that Hindi films are trying to be regional. They have a typical Punjabi family wedding or a film like Shahid which is about Mumbai and being a Muslim. Otherwise they make only pan Indian films like a Kal Ho Naa Ho or Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham.”

Claiming that it is up to the heroes to bring the change in the industry, Suhasini unfavourably compared Bollywood A-listers to Sivaji Ganesan, said, “Thank god, we had a Sivaji Ganesan who was not averse to tragedy and knew that a good performance — rather than a big production or a big heroine — could bring in the audience. Kamal too accepted different films.
That isn’t true in other industries including Bollywood.
