The Prakash Mehra produced and directorial “Zanjeer”, released in 1973, marked a pivotal moment in the history of Indian cinema, primarily because it introduced the iconic “angry young man” persona through Amitabh Bachchan’s portrayal of Inspector Vijay Khanna. This character, driven by vengeance against corruption and personal tragedy, emerged as a defining role for Bachchan, setting the tone for his subsequent films. The heroine, Mala, is played by Jaya Bhaduri (now Jaya Bachchan), who brings warmth and support to Vijay’s otherwise bleak existence. The villainous role is brilliantly portrayed by Ajit Khan as Teja, a cunning and ruthless smuggler whose confrontation with Vijay forms the crux of the narrative.
