Rajesh Roshan recounts offering refuge to Lucky Ali

Veteran Music Composer Rajesh Roshan, brother of veteran actor-filmmaker Rakesh Roshan, recounted a longstanding bond with Lucky Ali, revealing how the singer once left home following a brawl with his father, Mehmood, and found refuge with him.

Over a media interaction Rajesh was asked if Lucky Ali had worked under him as an assistant, he quickly dismissed the label, saying, “Lucky Ali was never an assistant but a friend and brother in every sense. He and his father would fight quite often. Mehmood saab was short-tempered and very firm in his ways—he wouldn’t listen to anyone.”

Rajesh then recalled a turning point: “One day, Lucky came to me, visibly upset, guitar in hand. He said, ‘I’ve left home and I’m not going back. Where should I go?’ I told him, ‘Come with me.’ From that moment on, he stayed with him (RajeshRoshan). Both made music, shared space, and built a bond that went beyond work.”

Lucky Ali, acknowledged for his soulful voice and deeply introspective songwriting, contributed as a guitarist on several of Rajesh Roshan’s compositions. Adding that “he played guitar on many of his songs, alongside other musicians. That period, worked very closely and he was constantly creating, exploring.
Lucky’s artistic journey hasn’t been without its struggles. In earlier interviews, the singer-actor revealed that his father never truly understood his creative sensibilities. Their relationship was marked by tension—especially when Lucky chose unconventional paths in music and cinema. “He never agreed with his concepts.

Breaking away from the shadow of a legendary parent wasn’t easy. Lucky admitted he was met with skepticism and judgment from many in the industry. “People who worked with my father took it out on me,” he said. “They didn’t know what to make of me. Was he an actor? A singer? Why was he.doing English roles? There was always doubt.”

Regardless those early hurdles, Lucky Ali carved a unique space for himself in Indian music. While his acting credits include films like Yehi Hai Zindagi, Sur – The Melody of Life, and Kaante, it’s his music that made him a cult figure. Songs like O Sanam, Kitni Haseen Zindagi, Aa Bhi Ja Aa Bhi Ja, and Safarnama continue to hold a timeless charm—marked by sincerity, melancholy, and a sense of quiet rebellion.
