His mother is from a Punjabi Sikh Khatri family. She taught psychology at a Lahore college before meeting renowned Hindi poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan at a cultural event. The two fell in love and got married in 1941.
After marriage, his mother Teji chose to focus on her family, raising her two sons Amitabh and Ajitabh while remaining deeply involved in the arts. She had a flair for drama, once playing Lady Macbeth in her husband’s Hindi adaptation, and was known to sing beautifully at social gatherings. She was the heart of the Bachchan household and a beloved figure in India’s literary and cultural circles.
In 1973, she was appointed Director of the Film Finance Corporation, supporting quality Indian cinema.
Even as his motherTeji Bachchan passed away in December 2007 at the age of 93, her influence continues to live on through Amitabh Bachchan and the values she instilled in him.
