Mumbaikars to brace for hot and humid conditions in the weekend
In the midst of soaring temperatures in the city, IMD on Friday has issued yellow alerts in isolated pockets of Mumbai and its neighbouring districts between April 5 and 7.
The temperatures are likely to surpass 37 degrees Celsius over the course of the weekend.
Over the past two days, the IMD had forecast the possibility of light drizzles with thunderstorms.
Even as Mumbai and Thane experienced patchy showers on Tuesday night with the IMD’s Santacruz station recording trace (negligible) rainfall, there was no rain on Wednesday. While the mercury hovered around 33 degrees Celsius on Monday, the maximum temperature shot to 37.7 degrees on Tuesday, followed by highs of up to 36.9 degrees on Wednesday.
The district forecast bulletin notes the possibility of hot and humid conditions with temperatures forecast to surpass 37 degrees Celsius after Sunday.
Weather experts have attributed the forecast rise in heat levels to the influx of dry northerly winds owing to an anticyclone in the Arabian Sea.
As per the IMD, there is an upper air cyclonic circulation over southeast Arabian Sea and its neighbourhood while the trough from Lakshadweep to Konkan has become less marked.
Earlier this week, the IMD forecast
above-normal temperatures in most parts of the country this summer (April-June), with senior officials announcing above-normal heatwave days in several states including Maharashtra.
IMD data shows that Mumbai is prone to high temperatures, hovering between 38 and 39 degrees Celsius, amidst April. The hottest-ever April day was recorded in 1952, when the maximum temperatures soared to 42.2 degrees Celsius.
