Mumbai to brace for rainy weekend-Orange alert sounded
After a brief lull, Mumbai is set to brace for heavy showers. The India Meteorological Department sounds an orange alert for the city and Thane district on Saturday.
After record-breaking showers in May when the city also experienced its earliest monsoon onset in 75 years, monsoon activity subdued considerably over the past two weeks. The absence of rain also spurred a spike in day time temperatures which touched 34 degrees on Thursday afternoon.
However, the Weather experts attribute the lull in showers to the lack of strong weather systems, such as strong westerlies, troughs among others which are crucial for monsoon currents in Mumbai.
Starting Friday, rain is slated to gather pace across Maharashtra with the IMD forecasting heavy to very heavy rains until at least June 17.
Even as yellow alert has been sounded in Mumbai district for Friday, an orange alert stating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall with thunderstorms and gusty winds has been issued for Mumbai and Thane districts on Saturday.
Meanwhile, a red alert–which refers to possibility of extremely heavy rainfall in isolated pockets–has been sounded in Raigad district on Saturday while in Ratnagiri district, the red alert will remain in place between Friday and Saturday.
