When Waheeda Rehman shared emotional chapter on her earlier life
Legendary actress Waheeda Rehman once shared an emotional chapter from her early life that reflected on both the challenges of societal prejudice and the power of perseverance. Making her presence as a special guest on the dance reality show Dance Deewane, alongside her longtime friends Helen and Asha Parekh, Waheeda revisited the time she was refused the opportunity to learn Bharatanatyam merely because of her religion.
Speaking with judge Madhuri Dixit on the show, Waheeda recalled on her desire to learn the classical dance form when she was living in Chennai. She had set her sights on a highly respected Bharatanatyam guru, but her dream hit an unexpected roadblock.
She recalled that she wanted to learn Bharatanatyam under the tutelege of our of her friend. But, he regretted his inability to teach her.
Puzzled at this, she asked him why he cannot teach he bluntly responded that since she being a Muslim he cannot teach.
Waheeda did not give up. She kept sending mutual friends and even her mother’s acquaintances to persuade the guru. Eventually, he made an unusual request—he wanted to see her horoscope.
