PM describes India as ‘Mother’ of democracy with over 2,500 political parties

On Thursday, 3 July,
PM Modi addressed Ghana Parliament
which saw a moment of shared surprise and smiles when he said, “India has over 2,500 political parties,” pausing to smile as murmurs rippled through the chamber.
He chuckled “I repeat, 2,500 political parties,” prompting louder reactions from the parliamentarians. Interestingly he addressed the Ghana Parliament in English.

He went on to add that True democracy promotes discussion and debate. It unites people, it supports dignity and promotes human rights.

He highlighted India’s vast diversity as a strength of its democratic fabric. “Twenty different parties governing different states,
22 official languages, thousands of dialects. This is also the reason that people who have come to India have always been welcomed with open hearts”.
Adding that the same spirit helps Indians integrate easily wherever they go.

After PM Modi’s address, Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin, Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, also repeated the humongous figure of “2,500 political parties”, which elicited laughter from Ghana MPs as well as PM Modi.

After addressing the Ghana Parliament, PM Modi greeted the MPs and shook hands with them.
PM Modi’s visit to Ghana, which is the first prime ministerial visit from India to Ghana in three decades, is part of his five-nation tour.
From Ghana, PM Modi will travel to Trinidad and Tobago on a two-day visit from July 3 to 4. He will then visit Argentina from July 4 to 5, before travelling to Brazil to attend the 17th BRICS summit followed by a state visit.
In the final leg of his visit, PM Modi travels to Namibia.
