Reportedly, the veteran actress and politician Jaya Bachchan declined to speak in Marathi at a public event, saying, ‘We are from UP, hum Hindi hi bolenge.’
The statement went on to draw a sharp backlash from MNS and Shiv Sena, eventually leading to a public apology. It is ironic that the Thackerays are making the language a political issue. Even amid the late Balasaheb’s regime, Shiv Sena workers were never into goondaism and vandalism.
