CM Devendra Fadnavis directs civic body not to starve pigeons
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has issued directives to the civic body (BMC) to maintain food supply to the pigeons until fresh arrangements.
He further went on to share that saving the lives of pigeons, protecting the environment, and safeguarding public health are all equally important. He also avered that shutting down pigeon shelters (Kabutarkhanas) suddenly isn’t appropriate. While implementing the decisions regarding these shelters, alternative arrangements must be made.
Due to restrictions on feeding pigeons in Kabutarkhana areas, there is a risk of starvation. Until a proper alternative is in place, the Municipal Corporation must ensure a regulated supply of food for pigeons.This initiative aims to save pigeons while maintaining public health.
The CM was speaking at a meeting held in Mantralaya to discuss issues related to pigeon shelters. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Forest Minister Ganesh Naik, Water Resources Minister Girish Mahajan, Skill and Employment Minister Mangal Prabhat Lodha, MLA Kalidas Kolambkar, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, and Additional Chief Secretary of the Forest Department Milind Mhaiskar.
CM Fadnavis stated that guidelines should be framed on feeding schedules—specifying when pigeons may or may not be fed—to ensure both their well-being and minimal adverse impact on public health. Large pigeon populations across the city are contributing to respiratory issues, droppings-related pollution, and public cleanliness problems.
A scientific study must be conducted to assess the health impact of pigeon shelters. Experts should prepare a report on this. Proper disposal and management of pigeon droppings are also essential, and available technical solutions for cleaning should be explored. Fadnavis also mentioned that discussions had taken place with former Union Minister Maneka Gandhi regarding the issue.
A related writ petition is currently under hearing in the High Court. The state government and BMC should clearly present their stand. If required, the government will also present its case before the Supreme Court, depending on the High Court’s proceedings.
The CM further instructed BMC to build and maintain aviaries (bird shelters) for better management.
