Red alert sounded

Mumbaikars on Monday, 18 August, woke up to heavy downpour accompanied by strong wind.
The city experienced temperatures between 25.5°C and 26.8°C, coupled with 89% humidity, while wind gusts reached upto 31.7 km/h affecting daily commutes and activities.

The day’s rainfall is expected to accumulate to 53.11 mm (2.09 inches). Visibility was limited to around
9 kilometers due to heavily overcast skies. The rain intensity predicted increased during the late afternoon hours.

These weather conditions led to localized flooding in low-lying areas, making travel challenging across the city. The combination of strong winds and persistent rain impacted road conditions. There was traffic chaos in Express highway-ways and vehicles were found moving at snail’s pace.

The weather forecast indicates that Mumbai will continue to experience wet conditions throughout the coming week. Tuesday, August 19, will face even more severe conditions with rainfall reaching 224.89 mm (8.85 inches) and wind speeds up to 46.4 km/h.
Wednesday will bring moderately lighter showers, while Thursday through Saturday will see continued rainfall with gradually decreasing intensity. Sunday may offer some relief with reduced chances of precipitation and clearer skies.

The weather outlook suggests that Tuesday will be the most challenging day of the week, with potential disruptions to daily activities due to torrential rain and strong winds. While the latter part of the week will remain wet, conditions are expected to be more manageable with milder winds and decreased rainfall.
The current weather system is part of the ongoing monsoon season affecting the region. The day’s anticipated rainfall is particularly significant, marking one of the wettest days of the current season. These conditions are expected to help replenish local water reservoirs.

Residents were advised to avoid unnecessary travel amidst these weather conditions. Those who must venture out should carry appropriate rain gear, including umbrellas, raincoats, and sturdy footwear.

Drivers should exercise additional caution due to slippery road conditions and allow extra time for their commutes. Indoor activities are recommended as alternatives to outdoor plans during this period.
