Sunny Deol recalls when Bollywood was skeptical over “Gadar”

Recently over a media interaction Sunny Deol recalled on Bollywood being skeptical over
the Anil Sharma’s directorial “Gadar”.

Reportedly, the industry had dismissed the film, but, the Sunny Deol-starrer went on to break all time records, ran housefull for months, and emerged as one of Bollywood’s most biggest blockbusters.

Interestingly, Sunny Deol ‘s role in ‘Gadar’ was initially offered to Govinda, who refused thereby convincing that the film would never succeed.

It needs to be noted that when filmmakers set out to create a film, it isn’t bizzare for others to quiz its potential success. A likewise situation happened in 2003, when a director insisted on narrating a script to the lead actor, who initially showed little interest. But once he heard the story, he was completely captivated. That film went on to script history at the box-office. And the name of the film was “Gadar: Ek Prem Katha”

Notably, the Anil Sharma’s directorial Gadar: Ek Prem Katha released in 2003 emerged as one of Bollywood’s most biggest blockbusters. Years later, the director resonated on the scepticism surrounding the film before its release.
He also revealed that Sunny Deol, who played the lead, wasn’t initially very serious about the project.

Notwithstanding its eventual legendary status, Gadar was met with considerable doubt. In a recent interview with a channel Sunny shared that the industry was far from confident about the film’s prospects.

Adding that whenever “Whenever he played the songs of the film to people, they didn’t like them”.. “Now the film is considered incredible. This happens because the audience and the industry often don’t align.

Sunny Deol also shared that when Anil Sharma approached him with the project, he wasn’t keen to take it on. However, after hearing the story, he was completely bowled over.
He ended up listening to the entire script overnight. He wanted the film to authentically reflect the era it was set in. He couldn’t even put into words what the experience meant to him.

Infact, the film was first offered to Govinda. Speaking about it later, the actor said, there was a lot of profanity in the script back then, and he wasn’t comfortable. Also, the idea of recreating a Pakistani setting in India seemed too
far-fetched. He couldn’t ever imagine the film.

Notedly, Govinda turned it down, but when the film released, it proved everyone wrong. It ran in cinemas for months, with housefull shows across the country.
