Undoubtedly, Hema Malini’s life story is an enchanting amalgam of talent, determination and grace. Over a chat with Women in Focus amidst her visit to Vancouver, Canada, Hema Malini resonated on her long and illustrious career, which commenced with dance and led her to emerge as one of India’s most esteemed figures in Hindi Cinema.
For Hema Malini, inspiration came early and incandescently in the form of the legendary actress Vyjayanthimala. As per Hema, Vyjayanthimala was a true inspiration, adding that her eyes beaconing at the very mention of the Legend Vyjayanthimala integrated grace, talent and artistry both in classical dance and cinema. She always admired how Vyjayanthimala carried herself. She showed her (Hema).that she could be both a dedicated classical dancer and a successful film actress.”
A dancer first, an actress by destiny
Inborn for Bharatanatyam, Hema began learning the art at the age of six and by nine was performing on stage.
She went on to recall passionately that her mother was her inspiration and the driving force behind her. Though her heart was set on classical dance, she was destined for other plans. She admitted that she never had the intent to be an actress but, wanted to be only a dancer. Yet, just like her idol Vyjayanthimala, Hema found herself gracefully bridging the worlds of classical art and cinema.
In hindsight on her career, Hema expressed gratitude for the many celebrated co-stars she worked with, including her husband, Dharmendra.
Hema reflected that legacy is rooted in values and it comes from discipline, devotion and the love of art. And just as Vyjayanthimala once inspired her to pursue both classical dance and cinema with equal grace, Hema now lights that same path for those who follow.
