Legendary Playback Singer KJ Yesudas’s voice carried rare sweetness and immense emotion. Such was the talent and power that he earned the title of ‘Ganagandharvan’ (celestial singer) from his fans. Over a career spanning six decades, he sang more than 50,000 songs in multiple languages. Born on January 10, 1940, in Kerala, his melodies went on to become timeless classics.
Only few artists have been able to match his scale of achievement.
He has sung in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Odia and even English, Arabic, Latin and Russian. The legendary singer redefined versatility. With eight National Awards for Best Male Playback Singer, his record remains unmatched, placing him in a league of his own.
He is a regular visitor to Sabarimala, the hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa.
Being a Christian some temples in Kerala banned his entry into the temple premises. It was only Sabarimala which has been welcoming him every year during the Sabarimala season every year.
