Although India’s victory in the 2026 T20 World Cup was largely celebrated, some critics and former cricketers expressed muted criticism, often callingbthe triumph as
 debacle.

Critics, including former England captain Michael Vaughan, labeled the final a “one-sided debacle” due to the heavily one-sided nature of the contest and the nature of the pitch.

Former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar made the controversial claim that India’s dominance has “ruined cricket,” comparing India to a “rich kid” dictating terms in a neighborhood game.
Whereas some felt the dominance was expected, making the spectacle less thrilling, with some voices suggesting it lacked the “spark” of earlier, more balanced tournaments.
Even former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri faced backlash for his “lifeless” and erroneous commentary in the midst of the final moments, which many fans felt watered down the achievement.

Notwithstanding the win, some critics pointed to specific issues like poor fielding (dropping 2-3 catches per match) or the lack of competitiveness from opponents in the final stages.
