The 1991 film Saudagar marked a historic on-screen reunion for legends Dilip Kumar and Raaj Kumar, exactly 32 years after they last appeared together in the 1959 film Paigham.
Legendary filmmaker Subhash Gais Saudagar is often remembered as a “clash of the titans” that bridged a three-decade gap caused by an alleged real-life altercation on the set of their previous film.
Subhash Ghai is credited with casting them together, overcoming industry skepticism and the stars’ personal rivalry.
The long hiatus originated from an incident amidst the 1959 film Paigham, where Raaj Kumar allegedly slapped Dilip Kumar too hard amidst a scene, resulting in a three-decade cold war.
Saudagar was a massive box office success (1991), becoming a musical superhit featuring popular songs like “Imli Ka Boota” and “Ilu Ilu”.
The film portrayed them as best friends who turn into bitter enemies.
Raaj Kumar threw a fistful of gulaal in arch-rival Dilip …Subhash Ghai revealed he used a “trick” of telling each actor that the other was a fan of his to get them both on board.
