In the midst of her final days in March 1972, legendary actress Meena Kumari specifically requested Mohammad Rafi to sing for her. Moved by her wish, Rafi visited her and beautifully rendered the classic duet “Mujhe Pyar Ki Zindagi Denewale”, a song originally filmed on her and Rajendra Kumar in “Pyaar Ka Saagar released in 1961.
Originally picturized on Meena Kumari and Rajendra Kumar in the 1961 film Pyaar Ka Saagar (with music by Ravi and sung alongside Asha Bhosle), the track became a deeply comforting anthem for the actress during her prolonged battle with liver disease.
Knowing she was approaching the end of her life, she also desired a very specific, poignant Persian couplet to be inscribed on her tombstone.
“She ended life with a broken fiddle
With a broken song, with a broken
heart, but nit a single regret”
The song that brought Meena Kumari solace during her final days was “Yeh Mera Deewanapan Hai” from the 1958 film Yahudi. Composed by Shankar-Jaikishan and sung by Mukesh, the track resonated deeply with the legendary actress’s own tragic life and unrequited love.
Meena Kumari often dubbed the “Tragedy Queen of Hindi cinema struggled with immense emotional isolation, a difficult marriage, and subsequent alcohol dependency.
In her final days while battling liver cirrhosis, this song provided her with a sense of comfort and a way to channel her personal heartache.
