Taboo to trendsetter:Kamal and Sarika’s 80s Love Story

Kamal Haasan and Sarika’s union was the ultimate act of defiance, breaking every societal norm. Embracing a live-in relationship while Kamal Haasan was still married to his first wife drew immense criticism, with Sarika unfairly labeled the “other woman”. Nevertheless, they boldly welcomed their first child, Shruti, out of wedlock in 1986, forcing a conservative India to confront a new reality.

When asked about the relentless gossip, Sarika famously stood her ground, stating that she had to be sure of her choices. She famously decided to have their child despite knowing the social cost.
Instead of conforming, the couple lived together in a committed relationship before officially tying the knot in 1988.

Their refusal to fit into the conventional box made them pioneers of modern relationship dynamics in the Indian film industry.
The 16-year marriage eventually ended in divorce in 2004.

Reflecting on the split, their daughter Shruti Haasan has spoken positively, noting that her parents were ultimately “happier apart” and citing her mother’s resilience as a vital lesson in financial and personal independence.
