The Food and Drug Administration (FDA), led by Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, has intensified its crackdown on illegal food operators by shutting down two hostel canteens at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay. The enforcement action was taken after surprise inspections revealed that these major student eateries were operating entirely without the mandatory Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) licenses.
Commissioner Mundhe emphasized that public safety and food hygiene laws apply uniformly to all institutions, warning that premier educational campuses will face strict penal action if they fail to comply with statutory health regulations. The FDA has ordered the immediate suspension of operations at both facilities until full legal compliance, proper sanitation protocols, and valid FSSAI certifications are obtained.
