The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued official show-cause notices to two prominent luxury hotels in Delhi’s Aerocity JW Marriott and Andaz Delhi following routine enforcement inspections that revealed critical lapses in hygiene, sanitation, and food safety compliance.
Amidst the targeted sweeps, food safety officers uncovered multiple severe non-compliances that pose direct risks to public health, prompting immediate regulatory interventions and the seizure of compromised inventory.
*Andaz Delhi (Hyatt Group): Inspectors discovered a major cockroach and fly infestation within the bakery and pastry preparation section. Regulatory officers seized and immediately destroyed 87 kilograms of expired sweets, outdated cake bases, and expired bread stickers.
“JW Marriott: A comprehensive audit of the premises revealed 59 distinct deficiencies. Notable violations included widespread cockroach and fruit-fly infestations in food production zones, heavily soiled cooking utensils, fungal growth on stored fruits (apples), rotten vegetables, and visible particulate matter floating in served drinking water.
Both establishments failed to maintain proper operational segregation between vegetarian and non-vegetarian preparation areas. Discrepancies regarding statutory food licensing and product labeling were also documented across both properties.
Regulatory Action and Next Steps
FSSAI has deployed enforcement actions under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. Surveillance and formal food samples were collected from both luxury properties during the inspections and have been dispatched to authorized laboratories for advanced microbiological and chemical analysis.
The management of both JW Marriott and Andaz Delhi have been served formal notices demanding a comprehensive explanation for the lapses.
They are required to submit compliance reports outlining immediate corrective actions. Failure to address these deficiencies within the stipulated timeframe may result in heavy monetary penalties or the suspension of their food business licenses.
