Ahead of the Durga Puja festivities, the West Bengal government has announced a comprehensive set of regulations highlighted by a complete state-wide ban on liquor sales and service in bars and restaurants on Maha Ashtami.
The new directives were revealed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari amidst a high-level coordination meeting with Durga Puja committees held at Kolkata’s Milan Mela Prangan. As reported
the measures are aimed at ensuring that celebrations remain peaceful and orderly.
All retail liquor shops and hospitality bars across the state will shut down completely on Maha Ashtami. According to The Federal on the day when devotees offer Anjali (Maha Ashtami) to “Maa Durga” all liquor shops in the State will remain closed and there will be no availability of liquor in Bars either.
A strict ban has been imposed on the use of DJ music systems throughout the festival and during idol immersion processions.
The traditional post-Puja carnival has been officially discontinued and replaced by localized cultural programming across multiple cities and designated immersion ghats.
Festival organizers have been formally advised to avoid themes, structures, or visual representations that risk undermining Sanatan traditions or offending religious sentiments.
