While the monsoon enters its final phase, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is pivoting its strategic machinery toward the city’s upcoming dry-season air quality challenges.To address rapid environmental deterioration across the region, the civic body has partnered with the Pune-based Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) to conduct an exhaustive emissions inventory.
Departing from past city-specific limits, the new assessment adopts an airshed-based framework covering the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). Because neighboring urban centers share a unified atmospheric basin, this collaborative methodology ensures cross-boundary pollutants are tracked and regulated collectively.Initial findings from ongoing diagnostic evaluations indicate that local residential areas are primary emission contributors, followed closely by commercial-institutional infrastructure and active vehicular transit. The data collection framework incorporates localized vehicle counts and residential fuel consumption diagnostics to design robust, long-term mitigation strategies before winter weather patterns trap particulate matter.
