In a massive announcement that ensures to redefine the landscape of Indian political thrillers,
Dharma Productions is teaming up with Leo Media Collective to bring the extraordinary, untold story of Rameshwar Nath Kao to the silver screen. Spearheaded by Karan Johar, this large-scale theatrical project will chronicle the life and legacy of the legendary spymaster who founded India’s external intelligence agency, the Research and Analysis Wing (R&AW), in 1968.
Scheduled for a high-profile nationwide theatrical release on August 11, 2028, the film is strategically positioned to capture the patriotic fervour of the Independence Day holiday weekend.
The ambitious cinematic event draws its narrative blueprint from the highly acclaimed book,
“Gentleman Spymaster”authored by noted defense analyst Nitin Gokhale.
Moving away from conventional action tropes, the film promises a gripping, sophisticated look into the architect of India’s modern intelligence apparatus. The narrative will span nearly two decades, capturing the crucial geopolitical shifts between 1955 and 1971 that altered the geography of South Asia and cemented India’s stance on global security.
Audiences will be taken deep into the classified corridors of power, tracing Kao’s journey from a meticulous officer in the mid-1950s to the creation of R&AW.
The film will culminate in the agency’s historic baptism by fire during the pivotal events of 1971. Filmed on a sprawling scale, the production aims to honor the legacy of the silent warriors who operate in the shadows, balancing high-stakes statecraft with intensely researched factual accuracy.
Expressing his immense pride in the project, producer Karan Johar shared that Leo Media Collective has painstakingly researched and dramatized the narrative with deep passion over the last two years.
