Fadnavis dismisses Thackeray cousins as ‘Ghajinis’ afterMumbai Election Protest

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has launched a sharp rhetorical attack on opposition leaders Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of an event on Sunday, Fadnavis described their recent joint protest march in Mumbai as a public display of frustration following their rejection by voters.

The political swipe followed a joint rally where Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray and MNS chief Raj Thackeray marched from Metro Cinema to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters in south Mumbai. The demonstration aimed to demand the ouster of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls.

Likening the Thackeray cousins to characters from the Bollywood film Ghajini known for short-term memory loss Fadnavis questioned the factual logic behind their grievances. He pointed out that Gyanesh Kumar assumed office as Chief Election Commissioner in 2025, the Maharashtra Assembly elections took place in 2024, and the Special Intensive Revision began in 2026. Fadnavis questioned how administrative decisions and appointments made in 2025 and 2026 could have retroactively impacted an election held in 2024.

The Chief Minister asserted that the high-profile march drew thin attendance despite significant initial hype, framing the protest as an attempt by the cousins to reclaim lost political ground. Several prominent figures from the Congress party and the Sharad Pawar-led NCP (SP) also participated in the joint opposition demonstration.
