Following the sudden passing of veteran actor Nana Patekar, touching revelations have emerged regarding his deep and enduring connect with the Pakistani cricket community, spanning over three decades. Rashid Latif, former Pakistan wicketkeeper-batsman has shared heartfelt memories of his association with the legendary actor, which originally dates back to 1994 amidst the Singer Trophy in Colombo, Sri Lanka. The bond was initially bridged by Indian cricketers Mohammad Azharuddin and Ajay Jadeja, who facilitated regular phone conversations between Latif and Patekar.
The connect grew so strong that Latif’s teammates affectionately nicknamed him Nana after the acclaimed actor. The cross-border mutual respect was highlighted in a memorable 1998 incident when Latif, while touring South Africa, sent his congratulations to Nana for winning a Best Actor award. Nana later fondly used this gesture to jokingly chide his fellow Indian players, noting that a Pakistani cricketer had remembered to congratulate him while they had not.
Basit Ali also paid an emotional tribute to the late icon, describing him as a genuine individual whose real-life persona mirrored the honest, powerful characters he portrayed on screen. Ali recalled how Patekar maintained close contact through the years, consistently offering warmth, care, and personal support during difficult family milestones.
The reflections from the former athletes underscore a rare, cross-border camaraderie that beautifully transcended sports, cinema, and political boundaries.
