Patekar vs Machchhar: Mumbai bridge naming row explodes

A massive political showdown has erupted over the naming of Mumbai’s newly constructed East-West Vidyavihar bridge before it even opens to the public. The infrastructure project has turned into a high-stakes legacy war, pitting the memory of a legendary cultural icon against a modern-day aviation hero.
The controversy ignited when the Shiv Sena (UBT) dramatically mounted banners across the structure, demanding it be officially christened the Padma Shri Nana Patekar Setu.

This aggressive move follows a formal push by BJP MLA Parag Shah, who petitioned municipal authorities to name the strategic link after Captain Smit Machchhar.
Captain Machchhar, a local Ghatkopar resident, earned global acclaim and civilian heroism honors after single-handedly thwarting a violent mid-air hijacking attempt aboard a Tel Aviv-bound flydubai flight. The BJP campaign frames the bridge as a testament to living bravery and national service.

Conversely, the Shiv Sena (UBT) is leveraging deep regional sentiments by championing the late, revered actor-philanthropist Nana Patekar, who passed away earlier this month. A senior party delegation pushed the matter further by directly confronting Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde with an official demand letter, intending to lock in the identity of the 650-meter-long connector.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has hit back at the escalating campaign, with ruling leaders accusing the opposition of orchestrating a manufactured row simply to hijack political credit.

However, Civic officials argue that while Patekar is an unassailable titan of Indian cinema, his legacy would be far better honored by naming a major performing arts theater complex rather than a railway overbridge.
As the physical construction of the two-lane flyover stands entirely complete, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation remains deadlocked. The critical transit route, designed to finally unite major eastern and western traffic veins over the central railway lines, stays completely stalled while both political factions refuse to back down.
