All this time around, Vasan Bala, who had directed Director of
Monica, O My Darling had been basking on the glory of all the praises, plaudits and appreciation that the film featuring Huma Qureshi in the title role garnered ever since it was released.

Now he returns to wield the megaphone for his yet another brings back yet another out-of-the-box offering, a docu-series titled “Cinema Marte Dum Tak”.

Notably, it is the director’s ode to all the cheesy Hindi films made in the previous decades.

In his recent media interaction, Vasan highlights the docu-series saying it isn’t his conscious decision to make quirky films.

Reportedly, Vasan embarked on his directorial debut with Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota and went on to helm a film in Ray anthology. He attained cult status as a filmmaker. He goes to add that making such projects wasn’t a conscious decision and feels that in cinema, one makes films to express oneself. Whereas, he has been around for a long time but, didn’t get any marks hence he thought, he will make whatever he loves.

Infact, he was all set to get rejected so there was nothing to lose. Cinema Marte Dum Tak also comes from within.

He further explained on keeping balance between mainstream commercial aspects with the weird storytelling.saging that he has grown up watching Naseeb released in 1981. In those days, watching films was on a big white cloth, but those are very blurry memories and then he started showing his love for Amitabh Bachchan, and Shah Rukh Khan.
Besides Doordarshan, there were a lot of mainstream films we were fed to. It was a very healthy mix palate of mainstream films with the Ramsay films. Back then, he loved every single film until friends used to tell him that it was a bad film.

Earlier, there was a need for a Shyam Benegal or a Vijay Anand to make films but today one can just try because the culture has become more democratic.

Vasan firmly believes that after Monica… the industry has started taking him more seriously. “Monica… actually gave him a little bit of confidence. Now, at least, people call him up and discuss his ideas, which he feels is great.
