Undertrial transgenders to get separate cells
Transgender community have off late become a pain in the neck. Their criminal activities are on the rise. Some of them are dangerous. They not only stretch their hands for alms but also indulge in other unpleasant activities like prostitution, sexual abuse, chain snatching robbing people at sensitive and lonely places.Transgenders are a common sight at busy traffic signals as they badger motorists and people on the road for money, at Railway Stations, Flyovers, Foot Bridges and above all in local trains harassing commuters for money.
Prisons cannot accommodate such dangerous transgenders in a private cell as they may pose a threat to life of other inmates.
Notably, the government adopts a step-motherly attitude to this transgender community, although a slightly more proactive approach could have done wonders towards giving them a better life.
Plans are afoot by the State Prisons Department for
fast-track construction of separate cells to house transgender undertrials in Maharashtra Prisons.
According to Yogesh Desai, Deputy Inspector General (Prisons) currently, there are 17 transgender inmates in state prisons who need to be accomodated with other inmates. And they are working on separate cells for them. The work on the same is to commence soon.
