Sanjay Leela Bhansali gears up to bring the Classic Musical film “Baiju Bawra to life. The film has been in the news on and off since recent times.

There were recent reports headlined of the period filmmaker not pursuing the ambitious project right now and will, instead, focus on a film with Shah Rukh Khan. However, it is now learnt that Bhansali will indeed be making Baiju Bawra as his next film, whose subject has been in his mind.

As the project has been with him for so long, it makes it his long-cherished dream that is finally materializing.
It has come to light that the filmmaker has spent countless years meticulously working on the minutest details of the film with the subject firmly on his mind all these years, a testament of its enduring impact and significance.

Baiju Bawra released in 1952 was an unassuming film, with a star cast in Bharat Bhushan and Meena Kumari and not-yet-famous music composer, Naushad Ali and which emerged as the mother of all musicals.

It had a singing hero, a coy heroine, a comic sub-plot, a rivetting jugalbandi amidst Tansen and Baiju, and then, that tragic climax in which the lovers wash away down a river.

There cannot be a film more Bollywoodish than Baiju Bawra, Vijay Bhatt’s 1952 classic, which, by a conservative estimate, was pooh-poohed as a pushover during the time of its making. Mehboob Khan’s Aan was the big one that year. Nobody on that set at Prakash Pictures, Andheri East, where much of Baiju Bawra was shot, felt that they were working on a film that would become a milestone.

Baiju Bawra combines all the elements of a Hindi movie that exist in the cinema of today; because in it, you can discern the making of Bollywood’s music—past, present and future. It has a singing hero, a coy heroine, a comic sub-plot, a rivetting jugalbandi between Tansen and Baiju, and then, that tragic climax in which the lovers wash away down a river.
