Looking back: When Saroj Khan called Shah Rukh Khan ‘male

In an interview legendary Choreographer Saroj Khan termed Shah Rukh Khan as ‘Male Madhuri’. This video has now gone viral. The choreographer spoke about
working with Shah Rukh Khan and non-dancers like Sanjay Dutt.
In the interview, Khan spoke on her experience of working with non dancers. She says Govinda, Akshay Kumar are good dancers but if she made Sanjay Dutt dance then that’s been the most fun experience for her. Saroj had choreographed Madhuri and Dutt’s song ‘Tamma Tamma Loge’ from ‘Thandedaar’. Saroj said that her only condition to say yes to the song was that Dutt would rehearse and come on the set. He was given a month’s time. But on the set, the day the song was to be shot, Sanjay along with the team pranked her that he had not rehearsed at all.
So, Saroj told him, ‘dance karke dikhaao, jitna aata ho’ (Dance and show me, as much as you know). The moment the song was played, Dutt performed the whole song and Saroj fell off her chair in dismay! The choreographer then admitted that Sanjay had worked really hard on the song and it shows
Meanwhile, Saroj also called Shah Rukh Khan, the ‘male Madhuri Dixit’. She recalled the time when she choreographed ‘Yeh Kaali Kaali Aankhein’ from ‘Baazigar’. The song was picturised on Kajol and SRK. She recalled that when she called Shah Rukh for rehearsals, he said, ‘Masterji set pe kar lenge’. During the shoot, SRK rehearsed for every shot for about 45 minutes to an hour.
He laboured hard for the song and deserves and award for it, and termed him as the male Madhuri Dixit.
The late choreographer Saroj Khan was legendary, for one hasn’t come across many like her. Her style of choreography and many songs done by her continue to remain iconic over the years, especially her collaboration with Madhuri Dixit with every song has been memorable.
Saroj Khan did her first independent work as a choreographer in 1974 but got acclaim much later after working with Sridevi in ‘Hawa Hawai’ from Mr India.
