South African Prez Cyril Ramaphosa heaps praises on Mahatma Gandhi at

At the ongoing BRICS SUMMIT 2023 at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg, South Africa, President Cyril Ramaphosa heaped praised Mahatma Gandhi for the important role played by him in South Africa’s history in helping defeat apartheid.

Ramaphosa noted that Gandhi taught his country the value of passive resistance which helped mobilize its people against apartheid and eventually overpower it.

Amid reacting to PM Modi’s comments on Gandhi at the BRICS Summit, Ramaphosa said “Gandhi was one who was strong on resistance and taught them passive resistance which he perfected and they escalated to various acts of boycotts against the apartheid system.

Unhindered, they were in a position to encourage citizen activism in organisations involved in their struggle, like the African National Congress and others.

Further adding, the South African President said it mobilised their people against apartheid and finally defeated it. This was possible only due to the role played by Mahatma Gandhi in the history of South Africa.

In the midst of his address at the 15th BRICS Summit, PM Modi had noted that the Summit was taking place not far from where Mahatma Gandhi had established the Tolstoy Farm, that acted as a vibrant self-sufficient commune during Gandhi’s tenure as a lawyer while staying in South Africa.

During his address at the opening plenary session of the 15th BRICS summit, PM Modi had also called for establishing BRICS space exploration consortium, saying that we are already working on the BRICS satellite constellation, but to move a step further, we should think about establishing a BRICS space exploration consortium,

President Ramaphosa conveyed his thanks to PM Modi for making the proposal for BRICS space cooperation system as also heaping praises for the successful landing of Chandrayaan-3 in the Moon.

In conclusion, the South African President also thanked PM Modi for making the proposal for BRICS space cooperation system, a very forward-looking proposal.
