In a recent episode of the most popular game show
Kaun Banega Crorepati Season15, Amitabh Bachchan recalled on the veteran director Prakash Mehra having asked him to sing ‘Mere Angne Mein’ in his film “Laawaris” and how his father used to sing it at home during Holi.
As soon as he put across, the audio question, and the song played, Amitabh Bachchan looked visibly embarrassed.
He even looked angrily towards the computer gesturing why they included this question in the game. He then asked the question, “Which of these is true for the song in the audio?”.
As the song kept playing, the host exclaimed, “Hey bhagwan, that’s enough! Please stop playing the song. I don’t know why… I now wonder what options would computer ji put up now,” he said.
The options were the director is the singer, the actor is the singer, the actor is the director and the composer is the director. As the contestant quickly picked the right one — ‘the actor is the singer’, Big B laughed, “The actor is the singer, and what a bad singer.”
The legendary star then went on to narrate how his father Harivansh Rai Bachchan used to sing the song during Holi at home. Amitabh Bachchan stated that it’s a folk song that he’s been hearing since childhood. Amitabh went on to add that one day Prakash Mehra walked up to him and said, ‘Hey, Amit, give me this song’. Amitji sked him what he meant by that. He then explained that he wanted to use the song in his film, and he (Amitji) agreed saying ‘Sure, why not!’ Mehra then told him he (Amitji)will have to sing it. Bachchan told him, he can’t. Phate huye baans jaise, very bad singer and he cannot sing. But he Mehra was persistent that he sing it the way he does at home. That’s how it was included and he sang it with great difficulty.
As Amitabh Bachchan finished his story, the studio audience started cheering him to sing again. “Nahi bhai, no singing,” he sternly said and continued with the game.

In the song, as readers may know, he took many avatars, and even cross dressed as a woman. Laawaris was released in 1981 and also starred Zeenat Aman, Rakhee and Amjad Khan.
