In the midst of the Netflix trailer launch of Amar Singh Chamkila
at Mehboob Studio in Bandra, Mumbai, Oscar winning Music Composer AR Rahman quoted that no filmmaker other than Imtiaz Ali would have approved a song like ‘Phir Se Ud Chala’: “Not just Indians, even those whites abroad vibe to it!
Present at the trailer lauch were
actors Diljit Dosanjh, Parineeti Chopra, director Imtiaz Ali, music composer A R Rahman and Ruchikaa Kapoor and Sheikh of Netflix.
Notedly, one of the most memorable conversations took place amidst Imtiaz Ali and A R Rahman. Both spoke over their bond and their process of working.
A R Rahman began by saying, “With certain people, you lose the title like director, composer, etc. You become friends, co-story tellers. Imtiaz is one of them besides Mani Ratnam, Rakeysh Omprakah Mehra and others.
He went on to add that Imtiaz never asks for a hit song and all that stuff. He merely listens to the story and suggests ‘Can we have this?’. He, too, has certain valuable suggestions.
Sometimes, Rahman gives him something completely unsuitable! He still stores it in his kitty. At times, Irshad Kamil comes up with beautiful lyrics.
A R Rahman then revealed, that in this case, the first question was, ‘Why him?’ because Chamkila ji has already composed the music. But what is our take on (him and his music) was their discussion. That’s how they were able to do all the songs.
Coming to the period touch, the music maestro said, that each period has a taboo and in this one, the more early it was, the more naughty the songs were! The same happened in Tamil as well. The 40s and 50s had certain lyrics which can’t even be used now.
When asked what does Imtiaz Ali do when he disagrees with
A R Rahman, shot back that for the first time A R Rahman had sounded a piece of music to him , and he was overwhelmed and relieved. Had he not liked it, he couldn’t say to A R Rahman that he didn’t like it.
On a serious note, he said, that with Rahman it’s always a discovery. It’s not about whether it’s working or not. He can’t even imagine where he takes him even in storytelling, forget about music.
A R Rahman cited an instance of the song ‘Phir Se Ud Chala’ from Imtiaz Ali’s Rockstar (2011), “If hebhad given that tune to anybody else, they would have told him ‘Its very complicated. Let’s not have this’. He, on the other hand, patiently sat, got the patience from Irshad and got it recorded in the voice of Mohit Chauhan.
He even went on to say that, it’s just Indians, even whites abroad vibe to it!
