Plans are afoot by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to transform Kala Ghoda area in Mumbai a pedestrians-only zone on evenings amidst the weekends, as part of enhancing tourism in the area.

According to the civic body, the plan to make it a vehicle-free zone on evenings amidst the weekends comes into force from September.

Explaining the idea behind making Kala Ghoda a vehicle-free zone amidst the weekends, Rahul Narwekar, Maharashtra Assembly Speaker and Colaba MLA, said, that “Kala Ghoda is an art neighbourhood of Mumbai. It has structures like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalay, Jehangir Art Gallery, National gallery of Modern Art, the Institute of Contemporary Art and Eliyahoo Synagogue.”

Former Colaba corporator Makarand Narwekar, one of the main persons behind the project, articulated that it was first among the many beatification plans in Colaba.

Adding that five internal streets, including Forbes Street, Rutherfield Street, Rope Walk lane, Saibaba road, and B Bharucha road, have been earmarked for the project.

With new pavements, paintings and lights, they are designating spaces with benches where people can relax and tables where they can relish their food from the nearby restaurants. Enough parking space will also be provided for visitors in nearby areas.

As per Narwekar the pedestrian-only streets are a new concept for the city and the feedback will be into account to improvise the scheme.

He added that for senior citizens and specially-abled people, there will be RFID-based (Radio Frequency Identification) vehicle access. It will also have a speed limit of not more than 20 km/hr in the restricted area.
