BMC urges citizens to avoid 12 Mumbai bridges amid Ganesh festival
It’s for the fifth time that the civic body – BMC urges citizens not to overcrowd on12 Mumbai bridges.
Until last year, the civic authorities used to list out 13 bridges, while one of the bridges in Ghatkopar has been taken for repairs this year by the civic authorities.
With just five days afore the Ganeshotsava festival, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has issued a list of 12 bridges, urging citizens and devotees not to gather on them while taking out procession of Ganesh idols.
All the 12 bridges are located in the island city amid Dadar and Churchgate and CSMT in south Mumbai.
As part of the directives, civic officials maintained that a maximum weight of 16 tonnes would be permitted on these bridges and the authorities have also urged the citizens and devotees not to play music with heavy bass on the bridges in a bid to avoid vibration.
A civic body official imforms that though these bridges are not in a dilapidated state, however, amidst the festival which draws large crowd with people carrying idols on trucks also accompanied by a procession of devotees the weight on these bridges becomes very heavy. And since most of these bridges are almost a century old, it is devotees are advised not to overcrowd and there needs to be a maximum limit of 16 tonnes on these bridges.
The ten-day long festival will kicks-off from September 7 till 19 September. Most of these bridges are located in south and central Mumbai, known to be the hotspots of Sarvajanik Ganesh Mandals, thronged by devotees from across the state and country.
Also, most of the workshops where Mandals are made is in central Mumbai from where devotees transport idols through processions.
