Revathy Asha hails release of Hema Committee report ‘historic moment’: ‘

Veteran actress-filmmaker Revathy Asha, one of the founding members of the Women in Cinema Collective (WCC), has strongly reacted to the revelations in this report.
In a note shared on Instagram Revathy hailed the release of the report as a ‘historic moment’.

She wrote, that at 2:30pm on 19th Aug 2024 a historic moment indeed – The 233 page HEMA Committee Report is released by the Kerala Govt after 5years of several hurdles including court stays, impleading and hours and hours of discussion within WCC with several lawyer friends who gave us sound advice. Our work now truly starts… to read, understand and work towards implementing its recommendations.”

Her note further reads, “As a WCC member I am truly thankful to all who understand the true meaning of this report. We hope to continue to strive for the safety and betterment of an industry that has given all of us an identity in the society. The pictures attached are of true happiness after years of emotional discussions and battles. The finish was indeed one that we will all remember – a classic nail biting moment. Heartfelt gratitude to all who believed in us as WCC #womenincinemacollective.”

Speaking to media Revathy expressed that though the release of the report was delayed, she is happy to finally see it released. She stated that the move is welcoming as a study of this kind has never happened in the industry, however, there is a long road ahead. She also stated that now the government and film bodies have to work in tandem to make the industry a safer workplace.

​The Kerala government, on Monday, August 19, has released the Justice K Hema Committee report, which reveals shocking details of the challenges and sexual exploitation women face in the Malayalam film industry.

Meanwhile, the report is based on testimonies from 51 industry professionals, which sheds light on the shocking details about the exploitation of women, including the existence of casting couches and poor working conditions, and the industry being ruled by mafias.
