Alaipayuthey” was designed for him amidst Dil Se Se.
Veteran filmmaker Mani Ratnam had
initially “designed Alaipayuthey” with Shah Rukh Khan in mind amidst Dil Se.
The 2002 Shaad Ali directorial film Saathiya, featuring Vivek Oberoi and Rani Mukerji is one of the era’s most cherished cinematic gems.
A Hindi remake of Mani Ratnam’s Tamil classic Alaipayuthey, which featured
R Madhavan and Shalini, the film catapulted Madhavan into the spotlight. Yet, few are aware that Alaipayuthey was initially conceived with Shah Rukh Khan in mind. Mani Ratnam had “designed” the film for him amidst their work together on Dil Se.
In one of his recent interview interview amidst the promotion of Chalte Chalte, Shah Rukh Khan addressed the sensational parallels amid Chalte Chalte and Saathiya. When asked if the two films shared similarities, he revealed, “Saathiya (in Tamil) was designed with him by Mani Ratnam when they were doing Dil Se.” However, he refrained from disclosing why their collaboration on the project didn’t come to fruition. As fate would have it, eventually Shah Rukh eventually made a brief cameo in the Hindi rendition of the film, marking a fleeting yet memorable connection with Saathiya.
In the same interview, Shah Rukh recounted how, once Rani Mukerji was cast in Chalte Chalte, they approached Mani Ratnam for a special viewing of Alaipayuthey. This request was rooted in a desire to ensure that Chalte Chalte would stand apart from Saathiya in both theme and execution. “Aziz and Juhi saw the original in Chennai. They requested Mani to show it to them when they recast Rani Mukerji in it. So it would be silly of to make a story like Saathiya (again).
Though Dil Se marked the only collaboration amid Shah Rukh Khan and Mani Ratnam, Shah Rukh’s desire to reunite has not waned. At a CNN-News18 event last year, the actor made a heartfelt appeal to the celebrated director, famously saying, he is requesting him (Mani Ratnam) he is begging him and telling him every time to do a film with him. swear, this time, he will dance on top of the plane for Chaiyya Chaiyya. Mani Ratnam, in his trademark wit, responded, that he will do a film with the actor when he buys a plane.
